Mistaken Identity!

by Sparkle

Have you ever had one of those moments in your life when you find out that someone is not exactly who you thought they were? I wish I could say I had not. But alas, I have!

I was working on my first rally as the vendor coordinator.  I didn’t know anything about any companies in the industry. I did recognize some brand names like Winnebego, Thor, or Forest River, but that was about it.  So I did what anyone would do, I googled companies in Elkhart Indiana where the event was being held. (As I write this I a laughing even more at myself but I had never heard of Elkhart and wondered why anyone would have an RV event in this city.)

I’m an over-achiever and before I knew it, I had 22 companies signed up to participate. On setup day, there was a young man just starting his marketing career with a small company. I had so much fun giving him advice about his career and encouraging him that he could do it!

The day after the event closed I was talking about this nice young man from the small company and the person I was speaking with started to laugh. What was so funny? This young man was the son of a very influential man in the industry and had been raised eating and sleeping that world. On top of that, the small company he worked for, was one of the largest in the industry. I was the one who really got schooled that week.

Have you ever had a situation like this? If you have I hope you learned to laugh at yourself like I have and found a way to grow through it.

I was one of the first vendors to agree to do Sandy’s first rally. We have stayed friends ever since. Her energy and enthusiasm were infectious and the fact that she tried to include the vendors in activities and not just see us as a necessary evil, was awesome.

Faith Note:

I mistook a young man as inexperienced in his career, with no connections to his industry, and working for a small company. Instead he was the child of a “king” in the industry, fully experienced, and working for a giant in the industry. For years I mistook my own identity. I didn’t realize who I really was. I am the child of the king! He owns the cattle on a thousand hills, and He knows everything. You are the child of the KIng too!

My blogs are intentionally short and should cause you to think. I try to ask a question that will challenge you to think not about how things are, but about how things might need to be in the future. I never point out a challenge without being willing to be part of the solution. I’d love to have your insight and thoughts. Let me know by commenting below.
